Even though driving has been limited due to stay-at-home orders, people are still finding reasons to travel. From being essential workers to leaving the house for supplies, commercial vehicles are still populating the roads. Unfortunately, this still leaves room for user error that can result in life-changing accidents. Traffic violations happen everyday, but there are several traffic violations that can result in serious and sometimes fatal car accidents. Here are 5 traffic violations that commonly lead to serious car accidents.

Distracted driving: As technology has progressed, the causes for distracted driving has increased as well. The use of car radios and cell phones cause drivers to look away from the steering wheel and potentially lose control of the steering wheel. This can cause rear-end, head on collisions and potential pedestrian accidents. According to Kansas City personal injury lawyer, Samuel M. Wendt, serious injuries “…can result in high medical costs, loss of career prospects, and a decreased quality of life.”

Speeding: The purpose of speed limits is to keep both drivers and pedestrians safe. Unfortunately, some people disregard these and travel at speeds higher than allowed. Speeding can cause serious accidents due to the lack of control it causes for drivers.

Following too closely: By not allowing for proper distancing between cars, it can result in tailgating situations that can end with head-on collisions or rear-ending. These types of accidents can result in traumatic brain injuries, whiplash and other serious injuries.

Driving under the influence: Alcohol and drugs can affect one’s focus and motor skills. Impaired vision, judgement, and poor coordination are all effects of using these substances. This is why it is illegal to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle if there has been any use of alcohol or other substances.

Improper lane changes: Not properly signaling or crossing into lanes without the proper notice can create major issues on the roads between drivers. Signals or hand signals are important to keep the flow of traffic safe for everyone involved. By not using signals or abiding by them, collisions on the road are more likely.

It’s important to follow the rules of the road in order to keep everyone safe. If you’ve been seriously injured due to the negligence of another driver, contact the proper authorities to be sure that your matters will be worked through fairly.
