* Shadyside (Walnut Street = upscale chains; Ellsworth Avenue = independent boutiques) * Squirrel Hill (Forbes and Murray are the epicenter of restaurants and shops) * South Side (lower East Carson Street = indie shops; upper East Carson Street = mid-scale chains)

For food shopping, nothing tops the Strip District (aka Penn Avenue, between downtown and Lawrenceville), although the East End Co-Op is great as well.
