    The Hotel on Rivington

The glass tower of THOR, as it's abbreviated, is a bit of an oddity amid the dingy low-rises of the Lower East Side, but the fact that it sticks out like a sore thumb gives its guests the benefit of an amazing view the likes of which you'd never get in midtown. The rooms all have floor to ceiling windows (mine had a view of the Williamsburg Bridge to one side and the distant towers of midtown Manhattan to the other). In an edgy design move, even the *showers* have full windows, which makes your morning scrub a bit more exciting than usual.

    Swell small bookstore

Every trip to NYC we make a point of stopping in at Crawford Doyle, a small bookstore near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's got an impeccably 'upper east side' literary section, and a fine antiquarian selection up top.

    Small, cozy, classy hotel

We stayed here for a couple of nights. The rooms were smallish, but very cozy, the hotel was spotlessly clean and the staff was friendly. Definitely worth the money!

Hudson Hotel: Great Outdoor Bar & A Great Scene

Love this hotel. You absolutely do not need to stay here overnight, but the outdcor bar is perfect starting in May. Trendy, but in a very bohemian way. The Library Bar inside is always a treat for a game of pool and is quieter to allow for a real conversation (gasp!). Try it!

    Bubby's Restaurant

My all time favorite restaurant in Tribeca. Typical to see families from the neighborhood in this restaurant. Good selection of food, and known for their pies (so try one!). You will feel like Vermont was dropped into the middle of Manhattan...wood floors, laid back atmosphere..and great food.

Ate there last night - one issue is that they do not seem to be very sensitive to food allergies. Still a nice place / but pay attention to what you are eating if you have any diet concerns.

Hard to find, but worth looking for. This little wine bar has only 14 stools. Hidden in Greenwich Village...try to find it, and see what you think.

    Tribeca Grand Hotel

If you want to stay with the "chic and cool" people this is the place. You can have a goldfish placed in your room. This was not a good idea as I thought mine looked very sad and lonely. Given that I was on my own and on business my pets demeanor did not lighten the mood.

They also do romantic weekend deals, it would be a great place to take a partner.

    Margon, Times Square Cuban luncheonette

Stuck in the tourist hell-hole of Midtown? Try Margon, a tiny little lunch place on 46th St between 6th and 7th Ave. Massive portions of rice and beans plus a rotating menu of Cuban and Dominican favorites for less than $10. Museum of Sex: Stinks.

It was a pretty big waste of time. Well, there were a lot of displays on the vast categories of fetishes. But the implicit commentary on gender roles, as well as a lack of perspective on the psychological aspects of these fetishes made for a pretty disturbing experience.

Long story short, if you just want to know about the mechanisms and tools, here's where to go. If you're looking for something more intellectual or broader than that, you'll be pretty disappointed.

    MoMA

Of the three modern art museums (in three different cities in the US) that I've been to, this was probably my most favorite. The exhibition space is great, and the styles of artwork just meshed well with me; I thought everything was really fun to look at. I could spend hours in this museum.

Brooklyn! Check out DUMBO, where you can go to Jacques Torres for the most delicious chocolate ever and Grimaldi's Pizza for authentic NYC pizza. Be prepared to wait a long time for Grimaldi's though. There is also Di Fara Pizza in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and its movie theatre - the Cinematheque - have great art and independent shows. Park Slope is a beautiful neighborhood of brownstones, with cute boutiques and awesome restaurants as well as Prospect Park on its east border. The Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Botanical Gardens are nearby.

Last spring I made it a point to find all the little parks in the city. Some very nice places have "Public Spaces"....the Trump Tower has one, Olympic Tower, and others along Park Avenue...I think they are fun to sit in and have lunch with friends, espc...if you want to keep costs low and grab a quick bite at a deli with a friend and people watch.

Ruby's is a long standing beach front bar from a by-gone era at Coney Island. Their jukebox still plays Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elivis & the like. They enjoy a "$1 Million Dollar" view, as Ruby's is in the boardwalk. It's an easy ride-30-45 minutes from Midtown on the subway and was voted in the 'Top 20 Sexiest Beach Bars' by the Travel Channel last season. **They open seasonally from Palm Sunday to Halloween.**
