In the East Village, Gramstand at Ave. A @13th seems to be popular with laptoppers in search of free wifi.

You should give Brooklyn a try. I stayed there for almost 3 months and it was pretty awesome... I also created a list on yelp of places that offer free Wifi, check it out:

The reading room on the top floor of the New York Public Library at 42nd and 5th is awesome. Free wi fi and the building is beautiful.

I second the New York Public Library.

Starwich Cafe, 43rd between 10th and 11th. Lovely little place.

MOMA (and free audio commentary via wifi!)

Goodbye Blue Monday, awesome little coffee shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Artwork and stuff all over the walls, good coffee, comfy chairs and couches, good music. They have like 4 bands a night every night of the week, all kinds of music. At night it's all beer and wine, but you can always get good coffee and cafe kind of food things. That was my office for a month until I got internet in my building. So I know of what I speak.

Central Park

Whole Foods on the Lower East Side on Chrystie St.

DTUT (downtown uptown) coffee shops, one in the UES, one in Aphabet City

South Street Seaport, Union Square, outside the WTC PATH Station, City Hall...any public park south of Houston essentially...

George Washington Square Park.

Avenue B & 13th- B-Cup cafe- East Village... very chill and good salads... Gramstand is cool , but it can be an inferno in the basement, even on the coldest day! tthere's the Italian cafe on 1st &13th, as well. goodluck!

Just go to any Starbucks in Town, they do all have free unlimited WiFi, furthermorge, at Union Square the park is completely covered with free WiFi
