Free State Brewery in downtown Lawrence is among the best microbreweries I've ever been to.
Their beer tends to be quite hoppy (some more earthy, and some quite floral), and often have a strong malt component. They've almost always got a few seasonal brews on the menu which I recommend, but the regulars (Wheat State Golden and Ad Astra Ale) are quite good as well.
The food's good too: pretty standard brewpub fare, done well. If you're here in the summer, make sure to order something with tomatoes: in the summer all the tomatoes served are grown organically on the owner's farm.
