Have breakfast at the Original house of Pancakes

This is a fantastic breakfast joint. The food is good and the prices are very reasonable. Make a stop if you get the chance!

Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House - you MUST go

Though now called "The Wilkes House" (Mrs. Wilkes has passed on, and she last took boarders decades ago), this is a must-visit treasure of Southern cooking. Come hungry. Everything is family-style, meaning you will meet some new folks.

    Just heaping plates of Awesome.

Only open for lunch (11am-2pm), and only on weekdays (Mon-Fri), so plan your trip around getting there.

Carey Hilliards, where the locals eat

This is how the locals eat. Come thin, leave fat--but happy.

Try the hush puppies. The sweet tea is like liquid candy. Amazing chocolate shakes. Try the BBQ plate. Mmmmm.

Breakfast / Brunch : Firefly Cafe. Their brunch is the best in town. If you can't get in there, a J.Cristopher's is a couple walkable blocks away.

Lunch: Zunzi's. Hands down the best food and atmosphere for lunch/early dinner in Savannah. Don't be turned off by it's long lines, or 'hole in the wall' atmosphere. Johnny will treat you right. Amazing food that is well worth any kind of wait.

If you want real Savannah food, go to these smaller places, not the chains. You won't regret it.

Super friendly owners, and very helpful if you are needing advice about town. Amazing bar-b-que. One of Savannah's "hard to find" gems hidden in an alley behind the church on Oglethorpe. Eat inside or out. Menu is small but good: BBQ pork, chicken, brisket, bologna, fries, mac and cheese, greens, and maybe a couple others. If you want real Savannah food, go to these smaller places, not the chains. You won't regret it.

This place may not look like much from the outside, but the food inside is always great! Marketed as "southern food with flair", it is exactly that. Good home-cooked Southern food, with a hint of Mediterranean influence. I have only had the Jerk Chicken, Pot Roast, and Meatloaf, all was great. The great side-item selection makes the meal even better: black-eyed peas, greens, potato salad, fresh veggies, and of course, sweet potatoes. Check out their menu online before you go if you are unsure, as it is not downtown, but a quick drive out to the Southside. Enjoy!

Brunch outside is where it's at. Second only to Firefly Cafe. If you are a tourist, pay no mind to the hangover-laden art students next to you, it's just part of the experience.

Nice, low-key place for some morning coffee just off the south end of Forsyth Park. I believe it has free internet. Take some cash though, as it is cash only. They have an ATM if you need it. They will often have student/local art exhibits, performances, and/or music going on later in the day.

If you are lucky on the weekends you may catch the Forsyth Farmer's Market across the street. If you miss it, fulfill all your natural food needs at Brighter Day Natural Foods, right next door.

The Crab Shack on Tybee Island. Nice place to relax and stuff yourself after a day at the beach or at Fort Pulaski.

The best takeout in Savannah, hands down. Get both the sauces on whatever meal you order. You will not regret it.
