  If the crowds get you down at the Smithsonian, make a b-line to the Sackler and Freer Galleries, right next to the Smithsonian Metro stop. These tranquil galleries are often overlooked by tourists, leaving their stellar collection of Asian art, special exhibitions, and an extraordinary Whistler collection to you. Head through a lovely garden to the Sackler in back, then explore the connecting Freer with the Whistler-decorated gold-and-blue Peacock Room, transported here from London.
