Nice upscale old-school restaurant in the Majestic Hotel. Good bar. Take a look at their mushroom soup: http://tinyurl.com/buuevx.

Four Barrel coffee is an extraordinary addition to the Mission. It sells some of the most gorgeous coffee in a sparsely decorated, wide-open environment. The staff are young, scruffy and make great coffees. It doesn't have wifi which in one way is a bad thing and other ways is really great because people move through it pretty quickly.

Surprisingly great French place tucked down a blink-and-miss-it alleyway near Union Square. Friendly hipster staff and top notch food.

Go to Canteen on Tuesdays for their very low price prix-fixe menu. Yumm. Reserve early (6 PM and 8 PM seating).

How is this place--a relatively non-descript little sports-bar in the Sunset--the home of some of the best casual mexican food in the city? It is totally improbable: wrong neighborhood (shouldn't the good mexican food be found in the Mission?) and the wrong context (it's a sports bar, after all) but it works. This might have been one of the best carnitas burritos I have ever had.

If you can only eat in one Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, this should be it. Don't let the lines scare you off (or better yet, go on a weekday.) Eat whatever the old guy recommends; it'll be delicious.

Love the W! Great rooms (especially if you can get one with a view of the Bay Bridge), comfy beds, fluffy pillows. Room service leaves something to be desired (quality is fine, but the selection is pretty pedestrian).

X Y Z - Local. Organic. Sustainable. Wherever. Whenever Possible. Chef Paul Piscopo's modern Californian cuisine is where you'll find the freshest produce and the distance between farm to table minimized. XYZ is great for an energetic sensory experience that can only be found at XYZ – from a menu featuring the fresh local ingredients, inventive cocktails, to an award-winning wine list. Chill out at Nihon, one of San Francisco’s must see venues, offers contemporary Japanese cuisine with a sophisticated twist on the traditional Japanese Izakaya (Japanese version of tapas). Nihon is renowned for amazing, house made creative whisky and champagne cocktails. If your in San Francisco Nihon is a must.

The height of perfection, with views surrounded by light and water in the midst of San Francisco's bayside Embarcadero renaissance. The new landmark building, Americano overlooks the waterfront and is located across from the historic Ferry Building Marketplace at the corner of Mission Street and The Embarcadero in San Francisco. The striking modern design will make the first impression as you enter Americano and take in the panoramic bay views from their circular cocktail lounge. Not only is the pristine alluring and comfortable atmosphere amazing so is the menu by chef Paul Arenstam. Americano is great for a private dinning room party with seating capacity of 14 people, but great for small private intimate setting as well.

One of my absolute favourite San Francisco restaurants is Ozumo. It's modern Japanese, sushi and wonderful mains. The best thing (and the most expensive thing) on the menu is the Kobe beef, which is about $100 for six-eight pieces about the size of the space when you touch your thumb and forefinger.

It is completely worth it. You will need to share it between multiple people as it's so incredibly rich. It will make the meal for you. Extraordinary.

This is Antonio La Tona's place. Everything there has his personal touch; from (of course) the food to the decoration. You can expect excellent seafood served in large portions and a nice atmosphere. A place not just to eat, but to enjoy a nice time.

This is a great whiskey bar (the wall is covered with a variety of bottles). They have wine and beer (from Magnolia brewery, down the street) as well, but if you've ever wanted to learn more about whiskey, this is the place to do it at. The bartenders are all somewhat subdued, but very cool and laidback. When you walk into the place, it's as though you've been transported away from the touristy/hippie/homeless Haight Street experience to a chic little New York dive. It get's crowded here, but there's always a good time to be had at the Alembic. The appetizers they sell are pretty snazzy too! A true favorite of mine.

This place is known for it's good Chinese Food and wonderful wine list that accompanies anything you may have a taste for. Reminiscent of a supper club in the city of Shanghai when it was the Paris of the Far East. Live Jazz in the bar many nights and a private cigar lounge - the only place to smoke indoors in the city of San Francisco and get bar service.

Taqueria Can-Cun is one of Stamen's favourite lunch destinations. We find ourselves choosing it over Pancho Villa quite often these days. I think it's because they serve avocado with everything and are guaranteed to be playing authentically loud Mexican oompah music on the juke box.

Architecturally curious and often described as a half-twisted Rubik's Cube. Word has it this is the high floors here are the second most popular place to kill yourself (after the Golden Gate Bridge). Given the drab state of the rooms here, it's not hard to see why.

I love this hotel. It's inexpensive and quite central to Fisherman's Wharf. If you're really not up for the most expensive stay in the city, consider being 'down the hill' and closer to the water. The best part about this location is you can easily travel either by streetcar or cable car, by ferry, on foot or by bike (hire at pier 39) or vehicle (car rentals in Beach Street) to anywhere you desire. Easy drop off from SFO or Oakland Airports by SuperShuttle too. Friendly staff, and will generally accommodate early check-in where possible if you end up lobbing in to town on an early flight. I've stayed here twice, and for the price, not been disappointed.

Conveniently located in the Marina District -- 6 block walk to the yacht harbor & the wave organ. Easy 10 block walk to the Palace of Fine Arts. One block to all the shops & restaurants on Chestnut St. Across the street from Izzy's Steak House. Free parking in the garage. Free Wi-Fi. Clean, neat & surprisingly inexpensive.
