Cabbages & Condoms in the central Sukhumvit area is a great start; the Thai food is excellent, drinks glorious and the ambience magical, in spite of the unassuming road. The name is a reference to the the family planning activities and initiatives the restaurant's profits go to support.

A little eclectic, a little bit of a giggle, but a great restaurant.

Kinnaree, maybe the best Thai restaurant in Bangkok. Much less spectacular than the C&C, but also superb food. Also, Via Vai, excellent Italian restaurant in the same soi. A nice combination could be dinner at Kinnaree, desserts and coffee at Via Vai.

Seconded on Kinnaree being a great place. Cafe Siam is also a great introduction to Thai food in a genteel setting of an old villa. I recommend eating in the garden but make sure to go upstairs for coffee upstairs.
