How to use a food hawker center in Singapore:

First: claim a seat! - put down something worthless, such as the ever popular packet of tissues (aka portable toilet paper) on a table that does not currently have people, other tissues, or menus - politely ignore anyone who directs you to a table - they probably want you to only order from them Second: check the selection! - flip through the menus at the various booths - veggetarian? there's probably a veggie-only booth or two - ask! Third: buy yer food! - if it says 'self service': that means pay, receive food, and walk it to your table - otherwise, pay and tell them where you're sitting Fourth: beer? - oh yes, they sell the Tiger - usually one booth will carry it, they'll sometimes let you carry a tab Fifth: CASH ONLY! Sixth: I finished eating, now what? - don't sweat it, someone will clean your table - one of the 'aunties' or 'uncles' roaming around with a bucket will take it all away.

    Hope this helps!

    my favourite crab joint

everybody in singapore has their own opinion as to where to go for crab. mine's at this place called melban seafood. it's in ang mo kio, north-ish of the island. it's been open for at least 3 years already and there are still queues every night. i live next to it. pepper crab is good. butter crabs even better. and those buns to scoop the sauces are good.

the best chain food you'll eat

it seems that everywhere you turn there's a crystal jade restaurant lurking in the background, ready to feed you. it's kinda like starbucks that way. i used to despise crystal jade as it was a chain of restaurants. how good can chains be right? well, crystal jade has set the standard. try the fish fillets with salt and pepper, e-fu noodles and eggplant in claypot at the crystal jade kitchen. if you chance upon the crystal jade La Mian joint (not as many, rarer sightings), you have to try the plain noodles with spring onion oil. it's to die for.

    buy some singapore home

if you liked the food and want to bring a bit of singaporean food home, i suggest you head to the supermarket and find the prima taste local food boxes. it is essentially all the dry ingredients you need to cook your favourite singaporean dishes. all you'll need to buy yourself is the raw foods. they have heaps of flavours- chicken rice, laksa, beef rendang, curry chicken, mee siam, the whole lot.

heaps of students who go overseas for their studies bring it with them. it's that good.

i think you can also buy them at the prima cafes too. there's one at centrepoint on orchard road in singapore.

    Arab Street

OK so you've been eating loads of chinese food and you've done little india... Now you want something different.

Want some excellent middle east cuisine? There are loads of good restaurants in the neighbourhood around Arab Street (http://tinyurl.com/5bdmvk). Try places like Cafe Le Caire (http://www.hungrygowhere.com/singapore/cafe_le_caire/) or even Nadezhda Russian.

There are lots of little bars where you can smoke a shisha and generally the food is very cheap.

    Best go in the evening.

Mortons Restaurant in the Mandarin Oriental is the first Mortons outside of the USA. They offer fantastic steak and a good range of seafood, and the overall experience is superb. Its a bit on the pricey side, but very much worth a visit.

If you're going to Newton Circus for some hawker food, beware. Many of the places are well below standard. One good restaurant here is Denmark Seafood. Give it a spin.

Western friendly Chinese is served at Da Dong on Smith St in Chinatown. All your favourites.

For Chinese -Banquet Hall style, the premier place is Lei Garden at Chijmes. In fact, anywhere I've been at Chijmes is great and weekends has a great football-crazy atmosphere.

i really liked this place called "Spize" or something, it was near nathan road, they stay open late at night, affordable and above all their food was really tasty, personal favorites were "Satay" and the Crispy "Sweet 'n' Sour Chicken" as well as "Cold Milo" drink.

if you prefer something mexican then "El Patio" at Holland Village was great as well and if you like all you can eat for fixed price type of fancy restaurants then make sure to check out "Carnivore" at CHIJMES down in victoria street

A popular place on the tourist map -- with prices that will keep regular Singaporeans away. Many hawkers stores have moved into food court in malls. Look for them at Kopitiam or Food Republic food courts.

I had a fantastic brunch here when I was in town for the weekend. It's a popular place so there was a bit of a wait on Sunday morning (reservations would be a good idea), but the atmosphere and menu was well worth it. The decor is modern with shabby chic touches and there is an indoor and outdoor seating area. The indoor area opens up onto the outside area, creating an open and bright feel. I met up with some friends from graduate school and it was a good place to catch up with friends. We sampled both breakfast and lunch items from the menu. Everything was delicious. Also, you must try some of the fresh fruit juices.

According to Anthony Bourdain, this stall has the best chicken rice in Singapore. So I went there and loved it. For only SGD 3.30, you get the large plate. It's a simple yet delicious dish everyone should try when visiting Singapore. Be prepared for the long queue on lunch time. The stall closes on Mondays.

Probably the best pizzas in Singapore. Fine ingredients, thin crust, and a real Italian chef. And for delivery, they really outbeat Pizza hut, Canadian and the lot!

This place has an amazing concept, bringing the popular Singaporean food stalls to the comfort of the shopping malls. It has many stalls, offering a variety of Asian (and even Western) dishes, with high quality, for a honest price. Both Vivo City and Wisma Atria (Orchard Rd.) branches are worth visiting.

Shoduko is an experience and a half, being both a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. Upon entering, you will receive a charge card for ordering before embarking on a tour of the establishment in search of your fancy. It will be hard to choose, everything looks fantastic and there is so much variety. The restaurant is divided into sections, each of which is decorated to represent a different portion of Japanese culture. If you have the time, go for a walk and explore every single section. You'll be amazed. Black sesame ice cream is to die for also. Yum!
