Atlas Parasite replied over 2 years agoBucharest is a city with a lot of history, a city that has been through a lot over the centuries. Known as “The Little Paris of the East” during the interwar period due to its architecture and intellectual elite, Bucharest suffered greatly during the Communist regime, in terms of its appearance as well as in terms of its identity as a city. Today, it really feels as if Bucharest is struggling to find this new identity, as intellectuals, museums, and art institutes strive to commemorate the city’s glory days while the country is suffering from severe confusion in the face of a hurried modernization, urbanization, and recent return to capitalism.
If you are planning on visiting Romania, I would suggest dedicating only a few days to the city, as there are so many beautiful things to see around the country – varied nature, better-preserved cities and traditional towns, etc (more in future posts!). That having been said, I suggest the perfect time to schedule a trip to Bucharest is during the newly-introduced White Night festival, which I attended last year, in its second year.
