If you want budget meals, look for University canteens (1 soup, 1 plate, 1 desert/fruit piece & a cup of juice, will cost around 3,00 Euros.

A lot of "tascas" (small restaurants, usually family owned) will have a limited lunch menu between €5 and €8, with a main dish, one drink (soft drink, water, or beer), and usually an expresso coffee.

If you're in to Japanese, try the Osaka restaurant (Av. Praia da Victoria, near Saldanha) with an all you can eat (sushi, sashimi and teypan) for around 12 euros (only for lunch)

This tip has the address "Av. Praia da Victoria"

If you fancy vegetarian food, then the Hare Krishna temple is mandatory. For as little as 6 euros you get soup, main course, herbal tea and dessert.

It's cosy, but not very large. There's a tiny garden where you can eat, perfect for hot days. It usually goes unnoticed, as it looks just like a normal building from the outside.

It's only open at lunch time and on weekdays, though.

for having a meal on a budget, i highly recommend the top-floor of the "Vasco da Gama" shopping center. ignore mcd, burger king and the other fast food joints. but there are some really nice and cheap portuguese outlets where you have a meal(large) in top quality and a drink for 6,50.
