Head to the Kanaalstraat, which is the main street of the city's multicultural neighbourhood locally known as Lombok. On Saturdays, lots of small-scale shops have their wares out on the sidewalk (weather permitting). An excellent opportunity to gather ingredients for a tasty home-cooked meal.

The Twijnstraat (comes off the Oude Gracht as you head south towards Ledig Erf) has some of the best bakeries, delis and kaaswinkels in the city. Pick up some supplies for a picnic and eat along the canal that rings the city.

For food Kanaalstraat is a wonderful experience. The open market on Vredenburg is nice on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Flowers on Oude Gracht, and Saturdays on Janskerkhof.
