On Fridays there is an outdoor market on Markt, where there will be many stands selling food (fish, vegetables, fruit, cheese, bread) and cheap junk (clothing, fabric, sunglasses, belts). It's a good place to go for fruit and vegetables, and is generally significantly cheaper than what you find in the supermarkets (often better quality as well). My favourite stand is located on Boschstraat, past the fish stalls. They sell more exotic ingredients along with the standard fare.

And near the Merret (Markt), there's a new shopping centre where one floor below ground level, they sell all kinds of fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, meat and regional produce (beer, cheese, apple syrup). The price level over there is quite steep though. I do agree the Markt is a great place to go and find fresh food. Be sure to get some flemish fries there, too.
