Amsterdam gets frequently visited by interesting bands from all over the world. The centre has two good places, De Melkweg and Paradiso (situated in a nice old church, this is sometimes called the Temple of Pop). Both are a 1 minute walk from Het Leidseplein.
If you are into gigs and have an evening off, do check out MyGigs.org to see who's on stage in and around Amsterdam.

Jonathan Brown replied over 5 years agoRijksmuseum Amsterdam
I recommend going to the Rijksmuseum, it has an extensive display of some of Rembrandt's most famous paintings. There is a restoration in progress on both wings of the museum that is scheduled to be completed in quarter 3 of 2008...should be a lot nicer then.

Matt Cottam replied over 4 years agoHotel LLoyd
I thought this place was comfortable - though a tiny bit out of town (a good thing I think.) Ecclectic - 2-5 star rooms available in one hotel. You have to take the 26 tram for 5 mins from Central Station, but I think it is worth it and it is in a very cool area.
Close to Jamie Oliver's FIFTEEN restaurant.

Martijn van Exel replied over 4 years agoMarvellous French bakery for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea
Owned and operated by two brothers with a passion for quality food, this place offers very fine French bread and patisserie. Breakfast, lunch or afternoon snack, to enjoy in the stylish locale or to take out.

Benjamin Hable replied over 4 years agoHans Brinker Hotel
If you're not picky and on your way to Amsterdam with some of your friends, you have to check out the Hans Brinker Hotel. It's filthy but cheap and really a lot of fun. It's advertising campaign is plain awesome, being aware of it's unperfectness :)
Breakfast is included and it has a bar (with happy hour between 5pm and 6pm) and a disco!

Thijs van Exel replied over 4 years agoSugar Factory
Do not miss out on the funk - jazz - hiphop fusion on the Sugar Factory's dance floor. Just 1 floor tall - very cosy and overseeable - but nice. Sometimes Fri and Sat become a bit too crowdy, but Wed, Thu and Sun are definately good nights to go there.
Very close to Paradiso and opposite of the Melkweg venue (see below).

Richard Cossins replied over 4 years agoGet on those bicycles!
The most efficient and best way to see Amsterdam is by bike! Cheap to rent, good for the health and an added bit of danger makes it a good combination for an experience!

Martijn van Exel replied over 4 years agoAnita
If you're into alternative clubbing, try De Nieuwe Anita. It's a little out of the way, but great fun on Fridays and Saturdays: live music, a quiz of some kind, cozy atmosphere, cheap cocktails. They close at 1 already, so turn up early. If you feel like partying afterwards, head to club 8 in the same area of town.

michelle replied over 4 years agoBest way to see Amsterdam
Rent a bike at Mac Bikes. We took our 2 kids (20 mos and 6 yrs) with us and toured the city and Vondel park on bike. We rented a Bakfietz, a traditional Dutch bike with a wooden box attached to the front, that we put our oldest daughter and occasionally together with our youngest. I rode a bike with a standard child seat attached to the front. it was the best way to cover a lot of territory and prevented any restlessness or complaints from the kids. We took frequent stops at gelato stands, parks, chocolate shops, etc -- so it kept everyone happy and we got good exercise too. it was an adventure for all of us and we bonded as a family. when my 2 year old recently saw pictures of our trip, she piped up and said, "i want to go there again".

Atlas Parasite replied over 3 years agoEver felt like you were born in the wrong time? Like you should have been born much earlier so you could have been an explorer of new lands? But what about the guilt of invading the space of indigenous populations and the disasters that come as a result? Well luckily, you were born too late and you don’t really have to deal with such dilemas these days. Instead you can just visit the amazing Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam and not have to involve yourself in that sticky mess directly anymore.

Ludovic Hirlimann replied over 3 years agoWhen it's the proper season - eg Mid-March to Mid-May. One thing to do is to go and visit the keukenhof . To go there you'll need to take the train to Leiden centraal station, and then a bus. But it's really well worth it. Keukenhof is the tulip market, so you'll be able to enjoy the view of multiple flowers and all sorts of colors. Really nice.
