Adam Honig replied over 4 years agoBest Indonesean Food in Amsterdam
Not many people go to the Netherlands for the food, and I always try to stop in on Tempoe Doeloe a great Indonesean spot on Utrecht Straat when I'm in Amsterdam. I think they have only about 10 tables, so you may want to make a reservation.
One day I went in there (a few years back) and was surprised to be seated next to Gwyneth Paltrow and the members of Coldplay! It didn't seem that the staff of the restaurant knew who they were...

Best view over Amsterdam on the 11th floor of the old postal building. Has about 12 screens projecting cool arty video stuff.
Unfortunately as of Juli 2008, this club is closed :( There are talks about a new club by the same owners, but no official word yet...

Matt Biddulph replied over 4 years agoLatei: coffee and retro bric-a-brac
Just off the Nieuwmarkt and not too far from Centraal station, Latei is a nice place for a quiet coffee and a bit of free wifi. It feels a bit like someone's livingroom, and the walls and ceilings are covered in imported retro light fittings, telephones and other household curios (most of which are for sale too).

An ambient and tasty place close to the central station (in a middle of Red Light district :). If alone I always go for Tibetian tea and sizzling duck, but other dishes I shared with friends were good too. Budget-friendly.

For 15 euors (22 dollars) you get a full tour of the facilities, and 4 tokens. 3 of the tokens give you drinks throughout the tour (beer or soda), and the last token is good for a souvenir at the end.

Adam Greenfield replied over 3 years agoHow can I not trumpet In de Wildeman?
...scene of my ritual humiliation at the hands of Chris Heathcote and some cider (!).
As the blurb says, quite accurately, "Situated in a former Amsterdam distillery, In de Wildeman offers an ideal opportunity to enjoy your beer in an authentic environment. We serve 17 beers on draught and have also a range of 200 bottled beers. Our range holds for the greater part Belgium and Dutch beers i.e. Trappists." (Try, especially, the Westvleteren: Mmmmmm.)
Also features, perhaps coincidentally, in the opening pages of Charlie Stross's "Accelerando."

Rogerio Domingos replied over 3 years agoVery Nice Thai Restaurant: "Take Thai"
I've discovered this place by chance, but I was quite impressed with the ambience, food and service. The restaurant is nicely laid out and could be a good place for a business or social dinner. The food was great, and the prices reasonable. It is located on Utrechtsestraat between Prinsengracht and Keizergracht.

Rogerio Domingos replied over 3 years agoVillage Bagels - Nice place for a coffee & bagels breakfast
Went to this place as it was close to my hotel, and since I am not a big breakfast eater, this is the kind of breakfast I like. I am also mad about bagels. Nice coffee and great bagels - the service is speedy and cheerful. The location, on the corner of Vijzelstraat and Prinsengracht, also makes this place a nice location to sit and watch people go by, while having a coffee.

Sarah Marsden replied over 2 years agoI think it may be closed for renovation for another week or two but if you want something a bit special you could try Le Zinc et les Autres on the Prinsengracht. There a la carte or a surprise menu (4 or 5 courses) with wines specially selected to go with each course. Great atmosphere and great food. http://www.lezinc.nl
If you can't wait until it re-opens another favourite is the Utrechtsedwarstafel on Utrechtsedwarstraat. There is no menu here and when you make your reservation you will be asked if you want 3, 4 or 5 courses, and whether you want simple, medium or gourmet food. When I went we had 4 "medium" courses, which were eachh innovative, seasonal and very well prepared. The chef and the sommelier are very passionate about their respective specialities and will tell you all about any special ingredients used or the wines which are served with each course. A real foodie's treat. http://www.utrechtsedwarstafel.com/

When I visited the city for the first time, I didn't exactly expect to find the best steak I would ever eat during my visit. But after a wander around the city, you'll see that South American steakhouses are all over the place— there are no shortage of places to have a great steak. But if you order correctly, Toro Dorado is the best steakhouse in the city … and for me, the best Ive ever tried.

Sarah Marsden replied over 2 years agoThere is a dearth of great places to settle a hangover or otherwise fill your boots for the best meal of the day - Brunch! Try this place for Sunday brunch. There's a guy called Jason Hartley (an Englisman in the 'Dam and self-professed foodie) who takes over the kitchens and turns this local cafe into Amsterdam's best brunch spot. Think Eggs Benedict (or Florentine), American pancakes, French Toast, and all cooked to perfection. I hear the coffee is also top notch. Only on a Sunday though...
