Shane Kerr replied over 4 years agoAmsterdam is not really a city one visits for shopping. But for mere mortals, try the Kalverstraat:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalverstraat
If your taste is a bit upper crust (yes I am thinking of you Mr. Rendek), then only the P.C. Hooftstraat will do:

Yes the "official" page is crap, but this is where you go if you want people to know how rich you are.

Kyle Obley replied over 4 years agoMy favorite market for food is the Noordermarkt. It's only open on Saturday and you should try to get there early before the crowds but it's well worth it. There are actually two markets, the main market and the Bio market. If you're headed towards the direction of Centraal along Prinsengracht it's right to your left when you get near the church. Anyways, great (mostly) Dutch meats, cheeses, veggies and bread. I think it's one of the most expensive markets, but it's worth it if you're into the whole bio-kick and locally grown/raised food.

Camiel none replied over 4 years agoThe Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk have the best selection of small shops, especially in the culinary category.

Another not-too-main-street shopping area are the nine side streets in the canal belt.

Iskander Smit replied over 4 years agoIf your are looking for interior stuff in the city centre you visit the Rozengracht. Or the shops on the KNSM Island like Pols Potten.
Even better places: The shop of the world famous Droog Design at the Staalstraat 7a. (http://www.droog.com) All time favorite Frozen Fountain at Prinsengracht 645 (http://frozenfountain.nl) Less known is 290 square meters near the Waterlooplein. http://www.290sqm.com/
Go for good vintage to Sprmrkt (http://sprmrkt.nl/) Rozengracht 191-193 Other good vintage you find at Zipper in Huidenstraat or Nieuwe Hoogstraat And Episode at the Berenstraat or Waterlooplein. http://www.episode.eu/

Daniel Crompton replied over 4 years agoThere are two Organic Markets on Saturday:
The first is held on the Nieuwmarkt (New Market) on a square in front of one of the old city gates of Amsterdam. This is a small market.
The second is held on the Noordermarkt (Northern Market) and is a large market with a larger selection of Organic produce.

James Bibby replied over 4 years agoI have to concur with the folks above on the Noordermarkt on a Saturday. Great organic and artisinal produce, meat, cheese, bread, etc There is also a great little crepe stand in the midst of the stalls!
If you are looking for for a grocery store, Marqt on the Overtoom is close to the tourist areas and has good selection and great quality food. (Prices to match in many cases as well) http://www.marqt.com
For fashion, hit the 9 streets for a break from the mega brands. The "negen straatjes" as they are called in Dutch house lots of local designers and boutique fashion stores. http://www.de9straatjes.nl/

Christine Mukakasa replied over 4 years agoNobody has yet mentioned the Albert Cuyp Market... This is one of the most vibrant local everyday markets. With loads of everything from food ( impressive fresh fish assortment ) to clothing ( new and vintage), flowers (bargains of huge 5 euro bouquets if you know where to look) ..... in a neighbourhood that offers influences from many cultures. This Market is everyday except on Sundays. http://www.albertcuypmarkt.nl/

Rutger Brandt replied over 4 years agoI see the Kalverstraat mentioned: take my advice and do NOT go there unless your suicidal. It's horrible, busy and very down market. Nice are the so called "Negen Straatjes", (9 streets): the sidestreets between the Prinsen-, Keizers- and Herengracht between the Rozengracht and the Leidsestraat. The same quaint little shops can be found in the sidestreets on the Northern side of the canals (closer to the Haarlemmerstraat) are equally nice Also nice is the Cornelis Schuytstraat in Amsterdam South. I think Amsterdam has great shopping possibillities!

Susan Mathew replied over 4 years agoAlbert Cuyp Market is a must for Amsterdam visitors who love bustling markets. If you are an art lover then check out Spui Art Market and Thorbeckeplein Modern Art Market. If you want to buy some antiques for decoration then go to Waterlooplein Flea Market or Noordermarkt Flea Market link building services | Link Building Blog

Jonathan Marks replied over 3 years agoAvoid the Kalverstraat...it is truly trash. It is amazing that such an important central area between the station and the Dam is full of tourist trash and a pathetic sex museum. Try the markets, and the 9 streets. Pick up the free Boom Chicago newspaper guide to Amsterdam outside their theatre in Leidseplein. Better than most guide books and a millions times better than the Iamsterdam hype which is truly some of the worst writing for any European city.

Liana Soares replied over 2 years agoI bought lots of things in Amsterdam, perfums, clothes, make up, and I think that the price is very good! Better than London and Paris! For all the city have stores, and mainly next to Dam Square!
