For adventure seekers (but still a beginner), you can try white water rafting at Kiulu River. Its rapids are suitable for beginners and the 12km ride down the river ends with a superb lunch (depending on who you sign up with) and will definitely put Kota Kinabalu in your heart's special place, making you wanting to return again and again and again; just as what it did to me.

You can take a ferry boat to some smaller islands just outside Kota Kinabalu for some nice snorkeling.
