First class or Second class train travel in Japan for someone that's really tall? ... is there a difference?

Yes there's a difference between regular and green car (first class) tickets and the difference is often worth it for taller and/or wider people.

Green Car travel provides both nicer seats and more distance between rows. I have sat with tall people in regular trains and they're OK, especially if it's not a particularly long trip, but they have generally been much more comfortable in Green Car seats.

Plus, the cost differential between Regular and Green Car for a long train trip is pretty reasonable (much less than trying to upgrade on a plane).
