During my recent off-season visit to Venice I stayed at the Hotel Abbazia. It was a nice, short walk from the Piazzale Roma, which is where the airport "fly bus" terminal is. Only one beautiful bridge (Calatrava bridge) between the P. le Roma and the Abbazia. (If you take the train, you won't need to drag your baggage over any bridges to get to the hotel.)

It is very convenient to the vaporetto (Ferrovia stop), which has 24-hr passes available.

The hotel itself is beautiful. The rooms are nicely decorated, and the staff is nice and helpful.

The only thing that might be seen (er, heard) as an 'inconvenience' is that the bells go off two times in the morning. Think of it as your wake up call (and "snooze" button) for breakfast. ;)

I would stay again during my next visit, for sure. The price is right, especially in the off-season.

Clean, nice rooms, private en suite, location is great (only about 10mins on foot from St. Marks square), staff are friendly and helpful, free wireless, decent free breakfast.

If you don't mind staying in a youth hostel, I usually suggest Ostello Venezia (www.ostellovenezia.it). Conveniently located on the lively Giudecca Island, it is just a short trip to San Marco by "vaporetto" and it is serviced all day and night long.
