Ristorante Pizzeria Flash, right in the downtown, near the Duomo Cathedral. A good place to eat a very big pizza or some regional dishes. Not so expensive too, even if it is placed in the heart of the city.

Not properly in the city center, small restaurant, but typical milanese cooking (try the risotto): Trattoria degli Orti.

Eating well on a budget in Milan is never easy, but for a reasonable meal in a rather interesting location, try the Design Library cafe', Via Savona 11. The cook, Luca, dishes out different meals every day, you can choose between different portions, and he's trying to turn the place into a sustainable restaurant. Quite a feat, considering you're bang in the centre of the design and fashion district of the city!

I'd suggest a Panzerotto at Luini, just behind Rinascente (Via Santa Radegonda, 16 - www.luini.it). It's a kind of closed pizza but very tasty and special, typical from Milan. You can expect to eat standing up on the street or sitting down on the curb and very very long lines at 1-2pm as all Milanese students converge to that place. On Sundays it is closed.
