While Yogyakarta is safer than bigger cities like Jakarta, it has it fair share of pickpockets. Take precautions to protect your belongings while walking along Jalan Malioboro.
This tip has the address "Jalan Malioboro" -
daniel mackinlay replied over 3 years agobetter yet, avoid Malioboro. There are far better places to be. IF the tourist strip is your thing, head directly south of Malioboro to the more relaxed strip comprising Jalan Tirtodipuran and Jalan Prawirotaman, off Jalan Parangtritis. Or head sound down Jalan Parangtritis to Parangtritis itself.
but if you *are* in the arts capital of indonesia, perhaps you should be checking out the art, eh? the notorious Taring Padi collective are based here, there and numerous other artists besides.... Ask at Cemeti arts space on Jalan Panjaitan or Kedai Kebun Forum (which is also a good restaurant) for the latest happenings, of which there are guaranteed to be many... Or ask your way to such organisations as The House of Natural Fiber (new media), Kampung Halaman ( i forget) or Mes56 (photography) ... Just steer clear of the batik boutiques and you'll be fine.

Mas Karebet replied over 2 years agoWell, its depend on what kind of experiences you want.
If you like some heritage and cultural attractions, try to visit Keraton Yogyakarta (The Sultan Palace), Prambanan Temple, or even Ratu Boko Temple. Each place has unique experience.
Love nature? Try visit the beach around Yogyakarya. There are so many of it. Parangtritis beach is the famous one, but much more crowded. Try to visit Kaliurang, its offer you fresh mountain atmosphere.
Try to visit http://www.jogjaportrait.com for some pics that might become your visual guide before visit Yogyakarta
