If you only get to one bar / restaurant in HK, make sure it's this one

Checkout Felix at the Peninsula Hotel. A little pretentious but the views are stunning, the menu offers brasserie style fare with a seafood slant and the toilets are not to be missed; the ladies' must have the best view of any loo anywhere on the planet, and the gents isn't bad too!

    Try Bar Feather Boa

Cute little bar on Staunton Street. Looked for the faded blue wooden door on the left, after the intersection with Peel Street. This bar is a legend in Hong Kong among those in the know. Wicked fruit cocktails. Often packed. Get there early to grab the comfy sofas near the door. The place used to be an antique shop.

    Lan Kwai Fong

Lan Kwai Fong is a very busy bar and restaurant district on the main island, quite close to the Central Station. Extremely busy and practically only tourists, but quite nice if you want some action.

    after felix

once you are done with felix, simply live the plush and go get some good spicy chinese! MASKS is a really good sechuan chinese restaurant by felix! Simply ask how to get to the world trade center as you leave felix. As you reach victoria street, turn left and keep walking. You'll see MASKS by a german bar: go for the stinky tofu, if you haven't tried you haven't experienced something unique!

    some good vegeterian food

LIFE is a good, and non pretentious vegeterian restaurant on the heights of Soho. To get there, simply go up the escalators and as you see the PURE red sign, get off and look on your left: there it is. The food is delicate and very very fresh. If you are goign as a couple, try to sit at the little mezzanine on the first floor: pillows and privacy... I love this place.

    Dragon-i is an awesome bar/restaurant

Dragon i is my new favourite bar and restaurant in the world, not just Hong Kong. It has comfy booths, great japanese/chinese food, beautiful cocktails and awesome music.

It's great crowd-watching as it seems to be full of models and rock stars (none of whom actually eat, they just drink champagne), all trying to out-cool each other.

Gorgeous interior design and really lovely staff

Have more time? Try explore the area around HK Gold Coast

If you will spend more than a week in HK, you may want to spend some time in the area around HK Gold Coast (Bus 962 from Causeway Bay via Wanchai, Central by Citibus). On the bus, one can see the 2 beautiful bridges of HK. Around the sunset time (around 5:30pm-6pm in winter, around 7-7:30pm in summer) , the view will be the best when lights are on. There are 5 beaches linked together. Walking along the beaches you will arrive at 'Three Saint' village, where you can find a lot of local hawker stalls serving different type of local cuisine and fresh seafood. I am still exploring, whenever my sister and I have more time. ;-)

    A few good indie cafés

These "enclaves" are small in space but big in attitude. Have a nice cuppa coffee or enjoy a good read far from the maddening shopping crowds.

Afterschool Cafe (http://www.shift.jp.org/en/archives/2006/07/afterschool_cafe.html) - it's located on 2/F, 17 Yun Ping Rd at Causeway Bay. Its a pleasant surprise to find HOMELESS, an interesting home accessories store, in the same shophouse.

MackieStudy (http://www.shift.jp.org/guide/hong-kong/art-design/mackie-study.html) - it's located on Flat A, 2/F, 52 Yun Ping Road, Causeway Bay.

If you can take hardcore local Chinese cuisine (not the fancy Western style food):

The Dim Sum at the Canton Room at Luk Kwok hotel is fantastic (slightly up the range about HK$200 per person) http://www.lukkwokhotel.com/food_baverage_2.php Authentic, they sometimes don't even have English menu, but you will survive with the assorted Dim Sum selection.

Hong Kong 'east' end - like Shoreditch but without the hip people http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shau_Kei_Wan Shau Kei Wan - find a place that sells 'fish ball noodle' for a Hong Kong tenner. Comes with white noodle (made from rice called 'Ho Fan' in Chinese). Local would stare at you if you are the only foreigner saying the word 'ho fan' but that's crack'n funny. and YUMMY.

    Oh man, I miss home.

Great seafood especially crabs and lobsters. Very small restaurant so you may have to queue to have a seat. The restaurant offers 10% discount if you take away.

Quintessential, colonial style, very unique supper club. The deco reminds me of 1920's, live band music, testy food, filled with Chinese modern art.... Amazing.

Honestly, it'd probably be easier and shorter to list the places in Hong Kong that aren't good to eat at than the places that are. Truly one of the great food cities of the world.

Great place for celebrity-spotting. Donnie Yuen (Ip Man) loves this place.

Szechuan-style prawn crispy noodles are my favourite dish here.

This is a bit more upscale than most Viet restaurants (too clean), but their food is delish. All of it. Really. And pretty cheap too.

I prefer the Peel Street location in Central (more convenient for me), but between these two places and The Flying Pan (near LKF on that super-steep road), there is no better Western breakfast menu in HK.

This place is somewhat pricey, but they do a wicked roast goose. They also do take out (enter the main entrance and takeout is to the left). Delicious. Highly recommended - especially just before a night out in LKF.

Second best dim sum in Hong Kong. You need to book ahead, but its worth it. PLUS they have the traditional carts, which is worth the wait.

The BEST place for dim sum in Hong Kong is some nameless place on Hau Wo Street in Kennedy Town (Saiwan) that opens at 3 am, just as you are finishing your night in LKF. Grungy, Dirty, Epic dim sum.

Recently opened (2009) on 31/F and rooftop of The Hennessy building. Spectacular views from the rooftop bar- great place to watch the sunset. The steakhouse is on 31/F floor.
