Cape Sounio, a temple with a view

I have only dreamed about going there but many friends say it is one of the most magnificent temples of the Antique era. Not so far from the Temple of Poseidon, its makes an ideal picnic journey. Perhaps Plato will wave to you from the clouds. On sunny mornings Your thoughts may rise above the mundane matters.

Go to the Acropolis, visit the place, but go in the afternoon, so you'll be around to see the sunset from that mount. Incredible visual. You may want to bring something to eat and drink and make a little picnic while looking the sun going down. After that, you can go behind the Acropolis where you'll find small street (you can go there only by walking) where you'll discover small places to eat, low lights, old buildings. Magical.

The new Acropolis museum is repetitive but impressive. Revel in the modern architecture and smoke-free atmosphere as much as the classical antiquities. At only €1 a ticket (December 2009) it is idiotic not to go.

The museum has a counter to the right where you can find pamphlets in English published by the American School of Classical Studies (which isresponsible for the site's excavations). These brochures are informative and useful to read as you wander around the extensive grounds of the Agora. If you are looking for Socrates's prison, you will find the location described precisely in the publication "Socrates in the Agora". I also recommend "Gods and Heroes in the Ancient Agora", "Life, death, and litigation in the Athenian Agora", "The Athenian Agora: a short guide", and "Graffiti in the Athenian Agora."

After nearly 30 year - then travelling with a scholarship by the AA (Architectural Association) London, I had the chance to be there again recently: amazing these proportions, the light, the materials, the shadow. www.hiegel.de
