Good dj and live sets, a very original, post-baroque interior at the Deaf Institute: http://www.thedeafinstitute.co.uk/

Brewery pub 5 mins walk from the Northern Quarter. Arguably serving the best choice of real ales, many brewed on the premises. Fantastic old tiled pub. Has a sister pub the Marble Beer House in Chorlton.

If you're feeling flush, this is the place to go. Best food & service we've had in Manchester (since Le Mont closed). There's also a brasserie and a great bar, where you can go for the ambience, the excellent cocktails and above all the people watching.

Yum! Thai and Malaysian food. Chicken Gulai my favourite.

Great hosts too. Can recommend the cookery course if you have a spare afternoon.

Awesome boutique hotel, really close to Piccadilly station. They do meetings, have fabulous suites including one called the theatre of Dreams named after Manchester United's stadium and the Best, named after George Best. It's an excellent place for lunch and dinner and if you hang ropund long enough you can find the odd celebrity musician or comedian. Definitely buzzin in the evenings and lunchtimes. V. popular at weekends. Here's the website: www.malmaison.com

The Theatre of Dreams. Eat in the Red Room at the ground before watching the world famous Manchester United Football Club in action. Very highly recommended.

It's always worth checking what's on at Urbis - some of their exhibitions are really excellent.

Quirky independent gallery housed in the basement of the Friends Meeting House on Bootle Street which is worth a visit in itself.

Bit of an imposing entrance down a side-street behind a buzzer, but that's all part of the experience.

I've visted a few times, and seen challenging, moving exhibitions about subjects from war to urbanism. Highly recommended.

Watch out for the occasionally irregular opening hours/dates.
