There are plenty of places around in the Charlotte Street, Camden. Choice goes from Indian to Thai to Japanese to Italian to Spanish restaurants and they should be suitable for all budgets.

Other choice would be to just go to Soho and walk around and pick the place you like the most.

Both of the areas guarantee you a piece of London :).

Tom's Kitchen in Chelsea. The food is always delicious and the service attentive. They have the best burgers in town. The truffled macaroni and cheese is pretty good as well.

If you are around the Kensington/Chelsea area and you are looking for vegetarian food, there's ASK restaurant in Gloucester Arcade at the corner of Gloucester road and Cromwell Road. The Mushrooms al forno is really great. So is the Pasta Pomodoro. It's not a veggie restaurant per se, but there are lots of choices. There's also a really nice falafel burger served at the Gloucester Arms pub at the junction of Gloucester road and Victoria Grove.

The South Bank of the river Thames has a lot of good, reliable places too. It used to be just the Oxo Tower (a good, but pricey venue) but now there is a whole load of places stretching along from London Bridge round to Westminster. The greatest concentration is near Waterloo / Charing Cross bridge. Everything from Pizza Express upwards.

If you want simple, try a Wagamama noodle bar (almost anywhere in the city) - very low hassle, not too expensive. Busaba Eathai is from the same restauranteur - similarly low-hassle Thai food. If you want a pub experience, choose carefully - a lot will just serve deep-fried everything. There are some nice ones around though. Square Meal is a good site for more detailed restaurant reviews.

If you're attending a convention or exhibition at the Olympia in Kensington, try Yas Persian restaurant in 7 Hammersmith Road (it's just across the road). Good service, great food!

I love Fish, next to Southwark Cathedral and the riverfront. You can have it any way you want it, which means you're almost always guaranteed a perfect night's food and drink :-)
