    Hotel Near Buckingham Palace

Just stayed at Sofitel St. James for one night in December. Great location for Buckingham Palace, St James and Picadilly!

Room was amazing and staff very friendly. We also enjoyed afternoon tea in their tea room with harp player.

Recommended. Will be staying here again!

    Hotel treat

Try The Covent Garden Hotel (part of the Firmdale chain) if you want an indulgent place to stay. Great location and a generally fabulous place to stay as a special treat - not cheap though!

    Cheap place to stay

Its not easy to find somewhere cheap and reasonable in London. We have stayed at the Citadine between Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross several times. Its not flash but it is well located and good value.

    Montana Hotel, Kensigton

Very nice location, with an underground station (Gloucester Road) right across the street and Starbucks - for you coffee junkies :) Also has a nearby Sainsburys, open 24/7, Burguer King and KFC (for those who don't mind saving a few pennies on food). The rooms are nice, with a plasma tvs and free wi-fi - which is always convenient. I had no problems with the hotel, only the continental breakfast was a bit small, but good for me (don't eat much). Probably will go there again the next time I go to London.

    Avoid hotel Thistle Heathrow

It's a total shithole, dirty, decadent, old... and hm, dirty again. Try Keningston, instead of Heathrow; there you can find decent budget hotels. Avoid this one like the plague!

Quirky & affordable Smith-hotel with a great lacation close to the V&A museum. A nice breakfast room with leave green details, yet somewhat eastern european serving style.

    The Goring Hotel

Was looking for a hotel last minute in an area near where my friends were staying and found The Goring via Google Maps. They looked to be the cheapest when comparing online though found out that many London hotels have less expensive rooms if you call and ask. All in all, a very nice hotel (with some cool geek toys) though aimed a bit more toward the middle-aged folk.

    My Hotel Chelsea

Is the most wonderful and cozy, little luxyurios hotel you could think of. The second day the hotel staff knew our brekfast habits already! Right in the heart of central London, but you couldn't tell when staying in, it's all quiet.

Palmer's Lodge is one of the nicest hostels I've ever stayed in, the building itself is impressive inside and out, and doesn't conform to the usual image of a dingy backpacker's haunt. The communal bathrooms are a tight squeeze, but the dorms are well-maintained, and the wi-fi in the lovely communal area works well. There are lifts between floors, breakfast, and a laundry.

Try St. Martin's Lane hotel. Very central, good rates and service. Rooms are simple and modern. Asia de Cuba and Bungalow 8 are also in hotel. Rate also includes access to the Gym Box next door to the hotel.

The Zetter in Clerkenwell is lovely if you like a quirky, stylish hotel. Great details in the rooms: two parallel lighting systems, one "normal," and one that bathes the room in red. For night vision? That bordello vibe? Not sure but I like it.

And the vegetarian English breakfast is fantastic.

Novotel London Paddington, Kingdom Street 3, W2 6BD LONDON

Very nice, new hotel situated a bit on a side but it's close to Paddington station. So if you wish to go to i.e. Slough the train will only take approx 20 minutes. And the hotels in Slough... well I wouldn't stay there if I had a choice.

Hotel also serves a very good breakfast and the staff is very friendly.

Don't just concentrate on hotels. Think Vacation Rental instead and you will have more benefits, especially if you are traveling as a family. In fact, I have started a web site to list out Budget priced vacation rentals. Right now, I have found several for London priced under US $150 per night and plan to find more to list.

The rooms are new, clean and overall very nice. The entrance to Kings Cross Tube station is right in front of the hotel entrance, which makes travelling to the Centre or the City an breeze!

Downsides? Continental breakfast buffet is not great and the restaurant is not the best in town by far. But good food is never far away in London ;-)

Sounds a little weird when your staying in a city and not using the airport, but the Yotel in Heathrow Terminal 4 is an ace place to stay when you're on a budget.

It's usually used for people with long waits for connections to lodge up for a bit, but if you're just passing through and you need to keep the wallet in shape, you can stay overnight for a pretty good price.

i'm planning on staying there with my girlfriend when we head down to London in a few months, an we got a 11 hour stint for £58. From downtown London, it's probably cheapest to take the Piccadilly line Tube to the T4 Underground Station.

And the fittings look damn nice too.

Nicely modern and comfortable, large bathroom (saw much smaller in more expensive hotels), ipod dock, around the corner from a tube station that goes straight to Heathrow, this hotel is a gem. Photos in room uncontroversial but rather pleasant, not completely bland. Had free wifi in the room. Tiny window in room 531, but didn't find it a problem. Will stay there again.

Nice and clean hotel, some very nice pubs nearby (my recommendation is Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Earls court road around the corner), breakfast buffet is quite poor, the eggs were looking as if they were laying there for ages. Next time I will save the money and have breakfast @Starbucks around the corner. Room with King Size bed GBP 155.- Staff speeks poor English.

Step on board for a unique experience, with Magna Carta, a luxury hotel barge on the River Thames. Situated in the Royal town of Windsor, the Magna Carta offers four large suite cabins with air conditioning, underfloor heating and a lot of room. Combined with fine dining and the opportunity to cruise along the River Thames, this is a once in a lifetime experience.

I've stayed here once, for two nights. It was such a memorable experience. The staff are what every hotel's staff should aspire to be. And while some of the older rooms are a little chintzy, the sense of space and grandeur makes up for it. We had a suite which was enormous - really enormous. To be greeted by name when you walk into the entrance of Claridge's by their doormen is something truly special. The most perfect blow-out treat: a room at the inn, dinner at Gordon Ramsay (fab, despite being a bit obvious and despite the lecherous waiter who pestered me for my email address and number) and then getting drunk in the bar afterwards on beautifully poured G&Ts.

Close to Hyde Park and transport options to Central London. Located in a quiet area and rooms are quite large in comparison to others at the same price level. Only complaint is the beds were quite hard, which in the great scheme of things isn't a complaint at all.

Still my first response when asked "Do you know a good hotel in London, not too pricey?" I've stayed here in 2008 and in 2011 and the 2011 version of the Zetter is even better! The restaurant has gotten an upgrade and the operation as a whole is running smoother. Read more about it and see what it looks like here: http://www.guidebook.se/?p=263

Very impressive. When I stayed there, they had only been open for four days, (first official day with 'real' guests was April the 18th). It has only 13 rooms, all very individually furnished. The staff is excellent and the cocktails served in the lobby/cocktail lounge are tops. Highly recommended!

It's quite impossible to describe, though. See what it looks like here: http://www.guidebook.se/?p=1005
