Hilary Perkins replied over 3 years agoBorough Market is the best for foodies. Open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Get there early on a Saturday (before 11am if you can) because it gets really REALLY crowded. Then you can stop off for a coffee at the Monmouth coffee shop before heading home to eat all your purchases for lunch.

André Avorio replied over 3 years agoVery close to Spitalfields Market is Sunday Up Market, where you can find amazing food (£5) from various parts of the world. Great for a late lunch, as it stays open until 5pm.

mia bennett replied over 3 years agoMy two personal favorites are: - Portobello Market over weekends for all kinds of stuff... food, fashion, arts and crafts (http://www.portobellomarket.org/) - Greenwich Market for crafts, art, food and antiques (http://www.greenwichmarket.net/)
These are not the typical cheap markets and a bit too touristy, but still worth a look.

Kevin Schmidt replied over 3 years agoBorough Market is a must, even with the crowds, it's still worth it. Queue up for a real filter coffee at Monmouth, then work your way through the cheese samples--guaranteed you'll buy something. Near the top of the market (closest to London Bridge), you'll find the best grilled cheese in the world. It's one of the first stalls towards the stairs.
Outside of that, the Queen Park farmers market on the weekend is also a great market with good food. Not nearly as large as Borough Market, but you can take your purchases and walk over to Queen park to enjoy them on a nice day.

Edith Speller replied over 3 years agoGreenwich Market (http://www.greenwichmarket.net/) is open Wednesday to Sunday - what it's like varies on which day you visit:
Wednesday: food market, mainly street food from round the world (like a mini Sunday Up Market) but also fresh fruit and veg and sometimes meat and sweets too. Odd bits of crockery too. Thursday: mainly antiques with some food on the side Friday: bit of everything - antiques, crafts, clothes, food etc. Saturday and Sunday: less of the antiques and more of the rest plus art.
My personal favourite days are Wednesday (as I work nearby so can sample different food every week) and Saturday/Sunday for the selection of goods, though beware as it starts quiet on Wed and gets extremely busy by Sunday!
There's also a good range of small independent specialist shops around the edge of the market, mostly open every day except Monday.

Mathieu Ayel replied over 3 years agoBorough Market just off London Bridge tube station is The foodies market in London, packed on a Saturday but so worth it. Northcote Rd market on Saturday in Clapham Junction is pretty small and sweet too.
-
Claire Bouchenah replied over 3 years agoPortobello market during the wekends for everything, it's so charming!
Spitafields market and Brick Lane market (the best one) for all fashion stuff, music, art and food but only on Sunday >> the best area in London !

David McDowell replied over 3 years agoIt's got to be Borough Market, London’s oldest food market, been around for 250 years, obviously it's great for foodies, all sorts of wonderful british and european traders.
If you're feeling plush go to Roast, serves lovely traditional british food, great for breakfast too - I loved it :)

Alexander Smotrov replied over 3 years agoI would suggest Borough Market for real food, Spitalfields Market for designer stuff, Portobello for antiques, though expensive, Camden Town for its people, though sometimes scary Small local food markets are very nice to buy freshly baked bread, very cheap fruit and veg, often a bowl for 1 pound, for example market in North End Road
-
Paul Campy replied over 3 years agoCompletely agree with Alexander - Borough for food, Spitalfields for designer stuff and gifts, Camden for sheer unadulteratd lunacy and cool stuff.
-
MissXu replied over 3 years agoAll suggestions so far are great, but tend to trend pricy, crowded, touristy. For something a bit more off the beaten path...
North End Road Market - between fulham bway + west kensington station. There's a darling old guy there that sells great cheeses that you can usually only find in the local markets in Verese, Italy and smaller areas of France. Natives of those areas would buy grudgingly (price markup) but still is way less pricy than any supermarket.
It's not a tourist spot though, only for locals. So, if you want to be a local, should totally check it out.
For Borough Market - go on Friday instead of Saturday, less tourists. If you must go Saturday, go before 10am + miss most of the crowds.

Adrian Sevitz replied over 3 years agoBorough Market I avoided for ages because I don't like markets.
Then I went and it was utterly fantastic. Total food porn.
Highly recommended.

Diana Sabey replied over 3 years agoBorough Market for food. Spitafields for clothes (plus gifts and food). And, Portobello for neighborhood spirit..
-
Tom Turner replied over 3 years agoUndoubtedly Borough Market, near Southwark Cathedral. You can literally buy any type of food you can think of, and many top restuarants are here along with more hidden gems.
But you could also try Camden Market. Many of my "contemporaries" enjoy being mugged and drugged there.

Boris Pluskowski replied over 3 years agoSpitalfields is certainly the easy market to fid - but for a taste of what it used to be like before all the renovations - go out of the market in the direction of Brick Lane and explore the area to the northwest of spitalfields where you'll find the more authentic markets with tons of stalls in basement areas, open garages - and trendy cafes selling food at the front, and a DJ spinning deep house and garage beats in the back - certainly a much better alternative to the ridiculous crowds of Camden - and a unique focus on vintage and underground fashion.

Also Acton Market. Thursdays/fridays/saturdays --25 arts/crafts/clothes/jewellery/ethnic etc stalls plus great home cooked Spanish paella, octopus salad, curries, spit roast, Aussie pies etc plus on Saturday mornings.
