Tom Armitage replied over 2 years agoSoane was an architect - indeed, he designed this house to live in himself - but he was also a collector, and after his death, the house has remained open, full of his antiquities and collection. The Hogarths - including all of _A Rake's Progress_ - alone are worth a trip, but to say that does a disservice to the rest of the house, chock-full of the spoils of a collector, his books, his paintings, some illustrations of commissions. Oh, and the sarcophagus of Seti I. It's cramped but a lovely place to explore. And, best of all: it's free.
The first Tuesday of every month, the museum is open until 9pm, and is lit only by candelight. It's properly magical, but the queues can be epic, so arrive early if you want to make it in.
One of my favourite places in the city.
