  The Thistle Hotel at Marble Arch is by far the one that I recommend to friends the most -- it's affordable and the location puts you right where all the Oxford Street action starts. It does give you a business hotel feel when you step inside, but the rooms are actually decent (the twin rooms are delightfully pleasant) and Selfridges is literally less than a minute's walk away.

  The nearest tube station is Marble Arch, and if you head across the junction past the arch itself you'll be at one of Hyde Park's corners. Stroll down Park Lane and you'll be in the midst of Mayfair's exclusiveness, and right at the door of Buckingham Palace.
