Canongate
Not the most glamorous dining room, in a shop front on Canongate, but cosy enough, and the service was friendly and helpful to the point of anxiety - 3 waitresses asked us if we were enjoying our food. Which we were. Local seasonal ingredients, perfectly cooked, simple presentation. Well worth waiting for our 9.30 table. Pop in to Monteiths on the High Street for a cocktail to pass the time.

This cafe with a difference is on Hunter Square just off the Royal Mile, across from the Tron yellow/scream pub. The chocolate soups from which they take their name are thick, creamy hot chocolates, generally served in a bowl with a spoon. After one you won't need to eat again for days, although I'm always left feeling strangely thirsty.
I can recommend the Belgian White Chocolate Soup, and everyone can recommend the muffins. Relatively expensive, but decadently indulgent.
They also do sandwiches, wraps and even porridge!
