Stainless steel pool @ The Scotsman Hotel

At the Scotsman hotel they have a stainless steel swimming pool. It's not massive but very cool. It's supposed to keep it clean or something. Whatever it does, it feels great, looks amazing and is always spotless. Their spa/gym thing is really dark and looks like something out of a Bond film. If staying at the hotel it's certainly worth checking out. I think the fees are expensive if you're not a guest or member.

The hotel itself is pretty cool. It's in the former headquarters of the The Scotsman newspaper.

The Balmoral is super luxurious. Beds are enormous and very comfortable, the spa is so good we visited it both days, and the staff are really friendly and helpful. Right next to Waverley Station, and within walking distance of all the sights.

The George Hotel on George St - a 4* hotel so it's affordable, but the upper end of the scale so it's lovely! Plus it's right smack in the middle of the action, with the shopping, bars and restaurants all nearby. Special mention to the gorgeous full Scottish breakfast - I'm not normally a breakfast person but this one is great :)

Is in Leith more than Edinburgh but is in as good location, plenty of local restaurants/bars and a couple of local pubs too. Service is good if not great. Room linen and the bed are excellent, really comfortable but carpets and furniture looked worn and stained in places. TV reception poor and no radio in the room. In-house restaurant and bar were very good, steak frites & tartiflette excellent for dinner and the eggs benedict superb for breakfast.

The Hudson does the job as a stopover hotel and it does it with a little more luxury than the standard fare. A few bad things (as that's what you're reading this for) the tall windows were gappy in my room (105) leading to a draught which the radiator couldn't match so it was cool when not in bed (February -2 deg C outside), the bathroom mirror lights were dull (a theme of this low-light hotel) and the shower was a useless hose & bracket affair. The good stuff. Small and boutique feel, great bed & linens, TV (with sound in bathroom), free WiFi, good staff, reasonable breakfast. Excellent location. It's not quite a Hotel du Vin but it's not Hotel du Vin price either. For a one-night stopover it's hard to beat.

The Ramada Jarvis hotel in Edinburgh was good value for money. The service was reasonable. The hotel itself is ideally located on Edinburgh's famous Princess Street. The dining area has wonderful views out across to Edinburgh castle. I would go back any day.

Decent price and right across the street from the bus stop. Lots of restaurants nearby and very friendly staff. The room was a good size and the breakfast was good. Would definitely go back again!

15-20 mins walk from the city center, or bus 41 takes about 10 mins from Waverly station. Friendly staff. Clean rooms and bathrooms. Very comfortable bed and sheets.
