    Excellent lunch @ b'est

Wonderful food just off South Bridge, Especially the sauces were absolutely delicious. 3-course lunch was a bargain - yet it was the best meal encountered during out two-day visit by far.

    Delicious food at Wedgewood

Not the most glamorous dining room, in a shop front on Canongate, but cosy enough, and the service was friendly and helpful to the point of anxiety - 3 waitresses asked us if we were enjoying our food. Which we were. Local seasonal ingredients, perfectly cooked, simple presentation. Well worth waiting for our 9.30 table. Pop in to Monteiths on the High Street for a cocktail to pass the time.

Lunch at the Dome on George Street

No messin', solid and well executed lunchtime grub, in a fantastically over the top converted bank, which when we visited was awash with Christmas lights. Cosy booths in the Club room were full to bursting by 12.30 so go early or be prepared to queue. Popular with elegant ladies sharing a club sandwich (the portions are pretty large so light eaters might want to follow suit).

    Chocolate Soup

This cafe with a difference is on Hunter Square just off the Royal Mile, across from the Tron yellow/scream pub. The chocolate soups from which they take their name are thick, creamy hot chocolates, generally served in a bowl with a spoon. After one you won't need to eat again for days, although I'm always left feeling strangely thirsty.

I can recommend the Belgian White Chocolate Soup, and everyone can recommend the muffins. Relatively expensive, but decadently indulgent.

They also do sandwiches, wraps and even porridge!

It's all about Urban Angel on Hanover St. Organic cafe with the most amazing breakfast but equally yummy dinner. Their eggs benedict with smoked haddock are to die for. http://www.urban-angel.co.uk/www/menus/

I also adore Cafe Marlayne on Thistle St. Amazing French food, phenomenal service but without any of the pomp!

If you are a fan of Chinese food the only place to eat is The Rainbow Arch on Morrison St. Talk to the owner Henry and ask what the 'specials' are. The best stuff comes without even looking at a menu. Plus he owns the jazz bar in the basement which is a fun night out.

Delicious British food. The best sausages in town, with fantastic mashed potatoes, and a side of baked beans. Your bill comes with a Fruit Salad sweet, and the reading selection inludes the Beano and the Dandy mags. Perfect for a Sunday morning brunch.

If you have a healthy appetite, enjoy an excellent burger and the intimate atmosphere that a smaller restaurant can provide, then Bell's Diner is the eatery for you. Located within the village-like Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, the Diner is situated within close vicinity of a number of cosy pubs.

It's one of Edinburgh's best kept secrets.

This is an excellent and reasonably priced restaurant. Has a bit of a gastro-pub vibe but with genuinely good food from a creative menu. Surprisingly good for vegetarians.

Good variety of bagels and fillings with excellent atmosphere and free wi-fi for customers. The coffee's not great and I can't say I'm a fan of how they toast their bagels but other than that, recommended. Particularly fond of the cheese and jalapeño bagel.

Used to be good about ten years ago, overtaken by it's own success... The views from the back room are great, if you can secure a table from the groups lingering over a single coffee. There are numerous places within walking distance that are as good or better, but without the view.

In Jan & Feb try to find a leaflet for "Dine Around Edinburgh". In the words of the list, "some of Edinburgh’s fanciest, classiest joints" take part. I can't remember if you need vouchers, but generally I think you just need to ask for the appropriate menu. Generally you'll find a two or three course meals for £15 - £20. One of my favorites is Cafe St Honore.

Hard to spot - it's under a tailors. Worth the wobble down the very narrow stairs for very good cocktails, friendly staff, groovy mix of bare brick and antique furniture, music not too loud, and customers a nice mixed crowd and not in the least intimidating. Split a Manhattan with a friend and get your own top up jug of cocktail balanced on ice in a teacup. Scrummy.

Free to get in (bonus! especially if you are used to paying a fortune to get into Kew in London). Not too large, but plenty of room for a wander around lovely plants. The cafe in the centre of the garden has a sunny terrace with great views over Edinburgh.
