    Star and Dove

The S&D is a great little pub tucked in a suburb just south of Central Bristol. Great relaxed/bo-ho atmosphere, and excellent food - both in the bar, and in the restaurant upstairs. There's a small garden out the back. They also have free WiFi.

St Nicholas Market on Corn St. Affectionately called ‘St Nicks’. In the daytime you can get everything from Jamaican jerk and curry, to Indian curry, North African food, smoothies, shakes, and heaps in between. Ridiculously reasonably priced, market atmosphere (hawker centre-esque if you've ever been to SE Asia), and under/in a beautiful bit of architecture.

The world’s best Pie, mash and gravy from vegetarian delights, to the mighty Matador (chorizo, and beef), or a sedate, glorious mint and lamb. Casually cool eating in the heart of Bristol’s self-styled ‘cultural quarter’, The People’s Republic of Stokes Croft. Everything served on tin plates for a reasonable price. Nothing fancy except the taste. Awesome.

May have improved since I went when it first opened, but on a quiet mid-week night, it took until a table of 12 was ravenous until we got our food, which was subtle and competent, but underwhelming and pricey. I have no objection to paying for genius (thinking about Mint/820 in Portland, Oregon, USA, or Gen in Brooklyn, NY, here) but I consider BQ a marginal victory of style and hype over substance. Sorry.

Fantastic food, great wine, unstuffy atmosphere. A neighbourhood restaurant that pulls folk from all over town...

Very pretty riverside gardens - worth £1 to get in. Lovely cafe that does coffee, Marshfield Farm ices, and fab cake. No undercover seating so one for sunny days.

We just popped in here for a drink, so can't say if the food is any good. There's a riverside terrace that is much bigger than it looks from the bridge, so a great place for a drink on a summer's day.

We went on a very hot June day and the upstairs terrace was lovely (though service a bit wobbly). Good cocktails, when we managed to get hold of them. Restaurant food also good, there's an outdoor eating area in the courtyard too.
