    Best Japanese food in town

Be sure to check out E-Kagen in Brighton's North Laine area. It's a great spot for a hearty lunch of soba noodles or sushi. And the gyoza kick ass. It's open every day except Mondays, as far as I know.

    Best (Veggie) Restaurant in Brighton

For a great meal in Brighton, check out Terre a terre. It may be a veggie restaurant, but it's one even the most hardened carnivores will adore. Amazing food, great wines and a really nice ambience.

    Best Japanese Food in town

E-kagen is good, but it's not a patch on Oki-Nami, which is by far the best Japanese food in town.

Best Fish and Chips in Brighton

There are some who say its Bankers, others favour Bardsleys, but for me the one to beat is the Regency. It has everything - a wide range of fish and seafood dishes, all simply and expertly prepared; a lovely location overlooking the sea next to the West Pier; and a range of nursery puddings in case you haven't stuffed yourself on your main course.

    Best Japanese Restaurant in Brighton

This Japanese restaurant is exceptionally good. It's often overlooked due to it being slightly out of town. Well worth a visit.

Great Thai food in Brighton & Hove

Go to Red Snapper off Western Road in Brighton. Wonderful venue with great decoration, very good value for money and the food is excellent. They also allow you to bring your own alcohol, but serve Thai beer on the premises. They have another branch on Dyke Road, but this one is more fun. Booking advisable too. 01273 733733

    Best coffee in town

Taylor Street Baristas really know their stuff. Be sure to try the flat white.

It might seem a little odd that it's located in a travel agents (Travelbag) but the coffee and the staff are outstanding.

best places to get some work done

there are several places in brighton offering different facilities for those looking for somewhere to get some work done.

Upstairs at Gemini on brighton beach is the newest, a cafe/bar designed with coworking in mind. providing reliable wifi, lots of power sockets, and great views over the beach. it also serves great coffee, and in the evening turns into a bar, hosting many local geek events.

    Most central place to cowork

The Skiff is a nice place to work in the heart of you can’t miss the pink door just opposite the Fountain Head Pub. It is generally open from 10am - 6pm weekdays.

The idea of The Skiff is to take the best elements of a coffee shop (social, energetic, creative) and the best elements of a workspace (productive, functional) and combine them to give independent workers the chance to have their own, affordable space. The Skiff was built on the coworking philosophy developed by Citizen Space in San Francisco.

    Good coffee

Like saccharine music, milkshake-style coffee and trashy decor? Then stick to Starbucks...this place is not for you.

If however, you like considered coffee, understated surroundings and a little sanctuary from Brighton's hustle, you should hang out at coffee@33.

Personal favourites are the flat white (large, 3 shots), Lemon & Ginger tea or any of the edibles.

    Unithai Oriental Market

For yummy, authentic Thai food in unassuming surroundings, check out the cafe at the back of the Unithai Oriental Market at 10 Church Road, Hove. Their curries and soupy noodle bowls are delicious, and their pad kee mao and meehot noodles will knock your socks off (when they say spicy, they mean spicy - but a can of coconut juice will put out that fire).

Teeny little place opposite the dome complex, but very buzzy atmosphere. Good portions, and their chorizo al jerez are excellent.

Have another branch on Sydnet Street called Solero (near E-Kagen) just as nice.

Gorgeous cakes, coffees, chocolates and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Some of the staff even have that Paris vibe about them (i.e. indifferent and challenging) but even that enhances the whole experience immensely...

Can't recommend enough if you like your café life with a french twist...

I've been to Jamie's Italian about half a dozen times now, and it's been great every time. There's always a real buzz to the atmosphere of the place, the serving staff have been friendly and helpful without fail. The only downside is that you'll probably have to wait a bit for a table as you can't book unless you're a party of 8 or more.

However it's worth the wait because, above all, the food is fantastic! The starter squid and meat plates are delicious, the pastas superb and the fish local and delicious. That's why we keep going back. It's all about the food.

Really lovely Asian/fusion food. But make sure you book, this is on one of the only places in Brighton you can't walk in and get a seat - even on a Monday!
