    I agree with Louise.

Picnicking under the Eiffel Tower (on a warm evening in late August) will go down as one of my favourite memories – it seemed to be where all the locals our age were, in large groups, drinking wine, watching the tower light up every few minutes.

It was nice to eat cheaply, in a relaxed environment, and on our own time. We finished the evening by cycling down the the left bank of the river.

If you buy your tickets in advance online, you can buy tickets straight thru to the top. Spend time up there, then elevate down to the 2nd platform and take the stairs back down to earth after exploring each level.

Time your trip in the early evening, about an hour before sunset, then you can enjoy the sunset and then make it down in time to enjoy the light show from the ground.

Expect long lines to buy tickets at the tower so it's best to buy tickets online. Saves you the hassle of standing in the queue for an hour.

There are several options for getting up the tower, including making a restaurant reservation (which gives dedicated elevator access), taking the elevator and taking the stairs. We found the line for the stairs much shorter than the line for the elevator, so that's the option we took. It's a less strenuous journey than you might think, and we were up on the first level in 10 minutes, and then walked from the first to the second level in another 15 minutes.

There's a place to buy drinks and snacks on both levels.

Once you're on the second level, it's possible to buy a supplementary ticket to go to the very top. Note that if you do this you appear to have access to a separate (and much shorter) line than for those who bought their to-the-top ticket at the same time as they bought their other tickets.
