A lot of cafes and pubs have free wi-fi (and they tell you about it with big signs outside. In Vieux Lyon there are several.

McDonald's locations all have free wi-fi, they are generally open late, and even open on Sundays, which is a rarity - I'd say they're the best option for free wi-fi in the city. The MacDos in Bellecour and Cordeliers have the best connections; the one on Place Ampere has pretty spotty access if you're sitting upstairs.

If you don't have your own computer, the public library branches have a few computers you can get access on, though you may have to ask to find them and get on them.
