As for the market I already suggested the one along the Saone river on Sunday morning. Then for shopping I'd suggest the huge commercial centre aright accross the Part Dieu station (Centre Commercial Part Dieu), with 230 shops on 4 floors . I do suggest not to go there on Saturday as its always crowded. To buy good and typical even if expensive food there's La Halle de Lyon (always close to Part Dieu Station) where you may find wine, fois gras , oysters and the best patisserie. http://halledelyon.free.fr/

Monoprix on the rue de la Republique is good for almost everything: clothes, food, cosmetics, basic home supplies/hardware, office supplies, books, etc. The nearest Metro stop is Cordeliers.

My favorite boulangerie/patisserie - at least on the presqu'ile if not in the city - is the Boulangerie d'Ainay a block in from the Saone on rue Vaubecour. It is between the Perrache and place Ampere metros.

If you're looking for a big shopping center, there is La Part Dieu, right beside one of the two the main train stations of the city.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a traditional French market, then there is a schedule of open-air markets in Lyon on the city's website: http://www.lyon.fr/vdl/sections/fr/economie/commerce_non_sedenta/halles_marches_1

And if you want to sample the very best of French fresh produce and cuisine, then you can do worse than Les Halles, on Cours Lafayette, quite close to La Part Dieu. Restaurants, fresh produce (cheese, fish, meat, vegetables), wine, and everything fine and luxurious.

If you're staying a weekend, then the Marché de la Création, Sunday morning on the Quais de Saone, near the cathedral St Jean in Vieux Lyon, is worth a look.

    Dave.

And also the market on Quai St Antoine, by the Saone river, a great place for regonial specialties, cheese, meat, etc... i'd ask for people to input on the days though...

For shopping, Centre Commercial Part Dieu near the main train station is one of the best shopping centers in Europe.
