Seili (swe: Själö, Sjählö eng. the Soul Island), an island north of Nauvo in the Turku Archipelago that used to be a leper colony between 1620 and the late 18th century. After that if was an mental asylum until 1963. The Island has a fantastic timber church built in 1733 (one of the kind that the Italians according to mr. Berlusconi would have torn down years ago). The Church has a special compartment for the ill and insane. Mass is held 2-4 times per summer. The asylum buildings from the 19th century are still intact. Check it out at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Själö. Can get there with a ferry from the Nauvo harbor or from Rymättylä south of Turku. Check with turist offices in Turku or in the Nauvo marina.
