Charlie Schick replied over 4 years agoThis is the main city market, with the usual fruits, veggies, and fish stalls. But there are also a huge number of crafts stalls, geared heavily towards tourists, where you can find typical (and not so typical) Finnish works.
If you do come here, come hungry so you can buy the a bit expensive but very tasty foods like paella and salmon. My favorite is Muikku, a small fish fried in rye flour. Tastes like yummy fish-flavored chips.
If you are hear just before Christmas, there is a craft fair along the Esplanade, a short walk away. The merchants then go full out showing what they can do.

Charlie Schick replied over 4 years agoCatch the HKL ferry from the east corner of Market Square. It costs the same as a regular bus ride (or you can use your HKL ticket if it has not expired).
Take a flashlight to the island, as there are tunnels to explore within the fort walls.
Head towards the second island, where there's a nice picnic field.
If you go to the farthest point on the island at around 5 pm, the Swedish cruise ships squeak by the narrow channel, looking like they are actually on the island, they are so close. Really cool to see.

Lisa Sounio replied over 3 years agoA Fantastic little hidden secret with sympathetically wild and romantic decor. You will be sipping coffee or a fresh home made non-alcoholic drink while a stuffed deer couple is guarding behind your back. Try blueberry pie with home-made berry quark or imaginative vegetarian lunch. Located next to Kallio's mad beer bars and other street crazy phenomena of Helsinki Bronx = Kallio. The owners are beautiful and eccentric too. You can purchase a painted "dressed duck" tray or funny little milk jugs that look like a 1/2 liter milk packaging. Check out the opening hours before going...

Lisa Sounio replied over 3 years agoKolo - a new tiny shop by stylist Mari Vatanen on the corner of the Swedish theater in Helsinki Esplanadi. This little flower shop sells also "juttuja & asioita" = stuff and stories. Check out the opening hours before hand. The swedish theatre also has a cafe KAFKA, where you may bump into Finnish actors or writers. They also serve affordable soup for lunch and coffee with Cinnamon bums. The theatre inside hass very beautiful interior decor. Also, funnily this theatre is the only building in Helsinki touched by famous American-Finnish Architect Eero Saarinen. His office did the renovations in the 1950´s. Eero is known better for the JFK terminal 5 in New York and the eternally iconic Tulip chairs.

Lisa Sounio replied over 3 years agoRestaurant Cafe Silvoplee has the tastiest organic and vegetarian food in Helsinki. It is owned by a domestically famous actress and sex symbol Satu Silvo and her organic food lover friends. You can fill your plate is LUOMU - the Finnish organic food that is either cooked or "fresh & alive" = non-cooked, and called Elävä ravinto. This kind of "living food" is very refreshing and excellent if you´re feeling tired, stress or ill, or even recovering from a disease. Silvoplee also served organic cakes and ginger beer or Luomu wine. The interior is a little too new age but the columns are painted by charming artist Vincent Bakkum. Lots of creatives and women form the regular the clientele. Open Monday-Saturday 11-18. Ps. Try the wheatgraas shots or carrot Juice!

Adam Greenfield replied over 3 years agoThe trams.
Helsinki public transit is, in general, outstanding, its two sole issues being the early hour at which it stops running and the unfortunate preponderance of urine-soaked wetbrains on certain tram lines, but the trams are probably my single favorite way to get around town. They come just often enough, stop just close enough to where you want to be, and the pleasure you'll experience in riding them combines communitarian twenty-first century virtue with a certain easygoing pace. More cities should do public transit like this.

Pekka Rautala replied over 3 years agoBesides all the great normal tourist places of Helsinki, I think the nature is very special. There is no other easier way to enjoy it right "downtown" than to take a walk around the bay of Töölönlahti. For those who have more time, this activity can be streched north along the green Central Park all the way to the countryside.
The other great feature of central Helsinki is that the sea is always close by and easily accessable because the harbours have been moved to eastern Helsinki.
The trams are great - especially #3 and #7 that make a round trip.
