Felfelah restaurant near the Mena House. Great vegetarian, falafel & Egyptian.

There are shawerama places everywhere... you'll notice them by the huge piece of meat roasting out front. Prices are pretty much standard everywhere.

If you aren't so bold as to try them randomly, then keep an eye out for the bigger ones, like "GAD."

Things you can get: - beef or chicken shawerama sandwich, 8inch (medium) for 6LE (~1USD) - fuul (fava beans) or taamiya (like felafel) sandwich: 1LE (~ 18 cents)

Or look out for koshari places, noted by the huge metal bowl behind a glass window. Koshari is a signature egyptian lunch consisting of rice and pasta topped with lentils, tomato sauce, and fried onions. Delicious! Usually, you can choose a 3LE, 4LE, or 5LE portion. The 3LE usually fills me up.

To really eat on a budget you should try koshari, which is good, cheap, filling and truly Egyptian! Go for Koshari Tahrir: it's a chain, so you will find it in many locations and you can be pretty sure about the hygiene standards. Otherwise any street restaurant sell ful or taameya sandwiches for as less as 50 piastres...
