Most of the city is reasonably safe. I travelled alone and found the people to be very friendly and helpful and never once felt threatened. If you travel alone, stick to getting taxis to your destinations, they are cheap and reliable.

I also hired some motorbikes and trekked to the hills and around the slum areas, which was fantastic, but not advised if you are alone.
