Look no further than www.cityweekend.com.cn. They have every conceivable restaurant on their website. Rated by real expats. Find what's going on that night or during your trip. Pick up a copy of their English magazine around town.

There's a big model of downtown Shanghai in the exhibition hall. Quite impressive. Also strongly recommend the Virtual World show. It's a 10 min round screen documentary of the city. I really love it and never get bored to see it whenever I visited the place. The downside is...well... some people may feel dizzy watching it.

Beautiful little Viennese cafe with delicious, freshly made cakes and home-cooked meals. Delish! Not very Shanghainese, but great to relax and while away a couple of hours.

A lower-scale but more artistic alternative to Xintiandi and the bigger glitzy shopping malls. Taikang Lu is a pedestrian-only maze of old houses converted into local shops, restaurants and art galleries.

Wendy Wong replied over 2 years agoSadly the old side of Wujiang Lu has been destroyed in order to make Shanghai more 'beautiful' for the Expo. Meanwhile, you can still find Yang's Fry Dumplings (生煎包) upstairs in the building with the Costa at the bottom (Nanjing Xi Lu station exit 4).

Henry Winter replied over 2 years agoThis is a fantastic gem - ideal when visitors encounter a rainy day. The best museum in Shanghai by 100x. The gallery is HUGE - life-size dioramas of old Shanghai - streets, shops, old cars...educational, interactive, and very cool. Highly recommended! Buy tix and enter at the same gate as for entry to the tour that goes up the tower, but then take elevator down to basement, while sweaty unhappy tourists wait in tremendous lines to be herded through dirty windowed galleries up top. Btw, MUCH better to have a drink on the 92nd floor of the SWFC!
Places mentioned in this tip include-
Shanghai History Exhibition Gallery
Basement of Pearl Tower (same entrance as lame tower tour)
