Adrian Cachinero replied over 3 years agoThere's not really many places other than kebab stands which will let you eat on a really tight budget.
Manora in St. François is good value for money.
Café Romand in St. François (in the building to the left of Starbucks, hidden away next to the entrance to an Asian restaurant) has a homely atmosphere and very generous rations of basics such as potato soup.
If you're really going to go for Kebab, at the other end of the M1 line is a small town called Renens. On the other side of the train station in Renens is a place called Maxi Kebab which is small, family run, clean and has fresh ingredients - the Durum is well worth the trip and will fill you up for the day.
The universities (UNIL and EPFL) offer decent food at decent prices for outsiders, in calm and leafy locations.
