Conceived of as a make-work project for men on social assistance during the depression, Saskatoon’s weir was built in 1939 to maintain water levels for utilities in the city as well as to allow pontoon-style planes to land. It’s not certain whether or not any such planes did ever land but the suggestion was made in an attempt to get federal funding for the project.

Today, the weir remains a popular destination point for those who watch the water continually flow over creating a man-made waterfall. Also many bird species return annually for the great fishing that the weir-created eddy affords them. A contest is held each year for people to guess when the most famous of the birds, the American White Pelican, will return to their hunting grounds.

On the west side of the weir, a promenade and viewing area has been developed by the Meewasin Valley Authority, the organization responsible for taking care of the river valley in Saskatoon and area. On the east side of the weir lies the train bridge and Innovation Place — Saskatoon’s high-tech research park.
