Steak: Avoid Ruth's Chris -- you're in Alberta now. Von's Steakhouse near Whyte Avenue offers excellent Alberta AAA beef, and a decent selection of fresh oysters and seafood to accompany it. Hardware Grill downtown also offers a very nice, if not somewhat pricey, steak.

Chinese Food: Lingnan Restaurant. Noodle Noodle restaurant. Both are just north of the downtown core.

Sushi: Furusato. Family owned and operated for many many years. Very small -- seats maybe 25. Mikkado downtown is also very nice, clean and modern.

Thai: Syphay on Calgary Trail South. Definitely the best Thai food in town.

Beer and bar food: Brewster's. Microbrewery, several award winning beers on tap. Surprisingly decent food, wings night on Tuesday.

Another good thai restaurant in Chinatown (near downtown) : Boualong Laos & Thai Cuisine.

I also think Ric's Grill has some decent food (steak and what not) but I don't think its as good as Von's (and probably not as pricey)
