    Visit the City Market

The City Market (Mercadão in portuguese) is a "can't-miss" if coming to city for the first time. Located right in the heart of São Paulo, you get the best of two worlds. You can either choose a more expensive food like in the restaurantes in the mezanine, or choose to eat typical brazilian street food on the ground level or just crossing the road.

This tip has the address "Center (São Bento metro stop)"

Best restaurants in sp are all around the 3 neighborhoods called Jardins, the more fancy and good high gastronomy, and surroundings. If you prefers local nice bars go Vila Madalena, also with good restaurants. Hundreds of options all around the city - web tip: www.seurestaurante.com.br , all addresses and short reviews.

There are several greats restaurants in Sao Paulo. I like the Skye at the Unique Hotel, just beside of the Ibirapuera Park. Also another great restaurant is a Lellis Tratoria at the Campinas Street in Jardins area

I can make a big list of the most famous restaurants in São Paulo, but I think the best food is at less glamorous places.

A Ham Hock Sandwich at "Bar e Lanches Estadão" Viaduto 9 de Julho, 193, Centro

You can also have a Bologna Sandwich or a Cod Pastel, at Mercado Municipal.

Places like these made the REAL São Paulo.

Of course this depends on what do you want to eat and how much you'd like to spend. If you just go to Itaim you'll find plenty of great places to have a bite. My favorite - meaning regularly good food, with honest prices - is Pobre Juan, at Miguel Calfat, Vila Olimpia.

They have all the brazillian classic fast food items, but go here for the "pernil", which is a delicious sandwich with pork meat. They also have salads, vitaminas.

It's in the Center, open 24h/day and it's the kind of place you go to after a night of partying to get your fats. Event at peak times the service is amazingly fast.

Some of my favorite places are: 1. Obá, on Melo Alves St, in Jardins. 2. Boa, also in Jardins, but on Padre João Manoel. 3. Sal, located inside the space of an art gallery, called Galeria Vermelho 4. Condessa 5. Mani - http://restaurantemani.com.br/

An unusual proposal: gather recipes restaurants devoted to various cities in Brazil.

Try "Um Dois, Feijão com Arroz", and a lot of "caipirinha" drinks.

Really excellent feijoada completa on a Saturday - well, I say completa, actually we only had the "magra" version that omitted the trotters, snout, and ears of the pig. Still more than enough for the two of us! Lovely batida to accompany (a shot of cachaça mixed with lime and sugar).

Bought bread and pastries from here a few times while staying at the Mercure hotel round the corner. Extremely good food, and well-stocked for a small bakery. The menu for food served at the table is also excellent and well worth it.

Went to this restaurant per recommendation in Time Out São Paulo - definitely worth it. At lunchtime it was quiet - easy for us to get a table and to eat well with plenty of attention from the staff. The best time to go would clearly be at night, as the narrow alleyway down which the restaurant is located comes alive with lots of candles lighting your way to the tables. With a little baby, lunchtime was our best option and we did well with their tasty set menu.

The beer list was a revelation; neither of us were expecting artisanal beers in SP. In particular we wouldn't have expected the beer we did choose to taste quite strongly, but very nicely, of cinnamon! Unusual but worked well.
