Ghent has a little of everything and the food in Belgium is generally excellent. If you are in the centre and just walk around looking at the menus you really cannot go wrong. McDonald's and Pizza Hut are both located on the Korenmarkt, but that is not really necessary as for the same price you can enjoy more local and less-processed fare.

Hint, pub food in Belgium is also excellent, but not always the cheapest compared to the United Kingdom where that is one of your best options. You might have your best luck walking away from the Centre towards the South Shopping (Het Zuid) where on the Vlaanderenstraat there are a number of Italian and Greek restaurants with very good lunch specials.

If you like Italian food, there is a nice Italian resto "Per Bacco" in the "Keizerkarelstraat", near the center. The evening and weekend menu isn't "budget", but still good value for money. Their week-lunches are quite cheap: choice of two dishes of the day, around 10-15 eur.

In the Soup Lounge on Zuivelbrugstraat 6 – between Oudburg and Vrijdagmarkt – you can have a hearty soup, some bread and an apple for €3.50. If the weather is nice you can take it away, which is even cheaper.
