Don't be put off by Travelodge Wynyard's website's rates. They usually have 3+ and 5+ night rates which are at a huge discount (eg $114 night instead of $205) so go through to their reservations system and see what they're charging today.

Lovely place, nice walk over to Circular Quay and the Opera House, across to Kings Wharf or down to Southbank and the gardens/restaurants around there. Less than 5 minutes from Wynyard station. Bit of an extra hike down to Central Station but certainly manageable.

The best coffee in Sydney (in my opinion) and slice of Italy on Pitt Street.

Sydney is really a nice place with busy nights. It offers delicious Italian food.

This is better than a pub. It is a great place to dine at reasonable prices and has a terrific outdoor cocktail bar which is directly under the "Coathanger" bridge.

The best Japanese restaurant in Sydney

The best way to see Sydney is by air. Blue Sky Helicopters have a range of scenic flights for all budgets.

Ichiban Boshi is a basic, reasonably-priced Japanese noodle restaurant. It's often busy with a queue of people waiting to get in, but they seem to attend to everyone quickly.

Pastel de nata of yo can only eat one or Pastéis de Nata if you plan to eat more then one. The coffee and these Portuguese tarts are very special. Truly authentic and will bring you back to Portugal in a mouthful or make you wish you had been. Petersham in itself as a suburb is well worth visiting with a very well stocked bottle shop with liquor from all parts of the world just down the road from Sweet Belem.

Bourke Street Bakery is a favourite with Surry Hills locals and one of the most popular bakeries in Sydney. You’ll often find a queue extending outside this small corner shop. The ingredients are organic and the coffee good.

A busy, mid range Japanese restaurant serving generous-sized dishes. Good food, great value. Prepare to wait, though: the whole of the upper level is set aside for people waiting to be seated.

Tucked away in the back streets of Surry Hills, this cafe is popular with residents and professionals who work in the area. Located in the ground floor of a converted warehouse building, the friendly staff serve good cafe fare with an emphasis on fresh produce. Free wifi is available (ask for the password).

Located on the first floor of a somewhat unprepossessing building, the Victoria Room is a stylish, exotically decorated restaurant and bar . Potted palms, damask wallpaper, button-upholstered chairs all combine to provide a rich backdrop for the good food and wine. The atmosphere is lively and the staff are attentive. The desserts are highly recommended.

Possibly the best pizza in Sydney. Noisy but recommended.

Five Ways is the hub of the historic Victorian suburb of Paddington, comprising a group of shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants clustered around an intersection of five streets. A great place for morning coffee.

This small reserve has been creatively adapted from the derelict ruins of the nineteenth century reservoir which originally occupied this site. The elevated grass mounds provide a respite from the Oxford Street shopping strip.

Sydney's best Chinese restaurant - the food is mouth-wateringly delicious. Owned and run by noted chef Kylie Kwong, the restaurant is committed to environmental sustainability. Ingredients are local, organic and biodynamic, and the menu a contemporary take on traditional Chinese cuisine.

Went there for the first time for lunch. Quite busy, but the food was served fast. I had the 300gm Rib Eye, and it was cooked as ordered. Would recommend.

Tucked away on Holt Street, off Devonshire Street, Vini is a small, intimate restaurant and bar serving good quality Italian food and wine. Vini is always busy, but you might be seated in the back bar - a tiny space converted from a shipping container - while you wait.

Gleebooks is one Sydney's best independent bookstores with a wide range extending over two floors. A must visit for book-lovers.

Located in the vicinity of Blues Point Tower (an atrociously ugly 1960s apartment building designed by Sydney's most overrated architect, Harry Seidler), Blues Point Reserve is a wonderful, picture-postcard vantage point to view the harbour, the city, the bridge and the Opera House.

Sydney's nineteenth century town hall was constructed on the abandoned site of the city's (and Australia's) first cemetery. Worth a visit to see the elaborately decorated glass-domed Vestibule and the Centennial Hall.

Gusto is a cute cafe and deli occupying a corner shop at Fiveways, Paddington. Serves good coffee, and the caramel slice is recommended.

Davidmetnicole: a jam-packed, eclectic store specialising in second-hand English and Australian furniture and ephemera and also new and old lighting, homewares and clothing.

Fantastic store ,but not if your tall ...things hanging every where . Well sourced industrial and vintage finds from the UK, America and France , this has to be one of the best little stores I have been into on my travels ,unusual and well thought about ..its a "must see" when in Sydney.

The Chauvel Theatre is an independent art-house cinema located in the historic former Paddington Town Hall, Oxford Street. Numerous film festivals are hosted here including the German, French and Russian film festivals.

A ten minute walk from College Street, so not sure it's on the right place on a map, but this is a great little restaurant serving asian food with a twist. Try the Mosseman lamb curry with mandarin. Delish! Main courses are about $30.

Drop into Bodgea for a bite, some tunes and a few drinks. It's worth the flight in from Melbourne...

Fratelli Fresh is a great place for Saturday breakfast / brunch. Located on the top floor of a converted warehouse, the atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are friendly.

The Departure Lounge: a great little store featuring Australian designed and made lifestyle and interior products from a couple of young designers. A good place to visit for gifts.

Architext: Sydney's specialist architecture and design bookstore, located at the offices of the Australian Institute of Architects.

There are countless Thai restaurants in Sydney - this one's cheap, cheerful and dependable. Recommended for a quick meal.

A perfect place for breakfast or lunch in Darlinghurst - classic, simple food by one of Sydney's noted restauranteurs. Scrambled eggs and ricotta pancakes are the specialties.

Sean's Panorama is a Sydney institution. Don't be fooled by the informal, unassuming interior of this beach-side restaurant - it's not cheap, but it's worth it. Sensational contemporary Australian food and wine, great on a summer's weekend.

This pub / restaurant is very Sydney: large with a slick interior comprising expensive materials and finishes. The beer garden is packed shoulder-to-shoulder with the 30-something professional crowd on summer evenings.
