Market City is great for shopping if you can handle the mall-like atmosphere. For food Herdsman Fresh is the second best, the best is Claremont fresh.

best local market? Fremantle! The freshest and cheapest veggie there! The market opens on weekends only though.

The Station St Markets in Subiaco are closest to me, so I'm a regular. Great fruit & veg (usually cheaper than Freo, just as good), nice bakery, coffee, French baker, and a smattering of the non-food markets goodies you'd expect in Freo.

Fremantle Markets is #1, followed by the Subi Markets. Also, a lot of local areas such as Leederville now have arts, craft and food markets operating on the weekends. Check your local guides for more information.
